Building Industry Association of Hawaii’s annual award recognizes the diversity and excellence in quality construction and design of new and remodeled projects.
Located on six acres atop Wailuku Heights, 1,200-feet above sea level, the Wailuku residence, called “Lona Ridge” offers a sweeping view of Central Maui from northern coast to southern coast.
“Our concept was to create a design with Hawaii’s unique historic character – to give the feeling the home had been there for generations,” said Project Architect Morgan Gerdel of Nishikawa Architects, Inc. “In the 1920s and 30s Hawaii architect C.W. Dickey designed a number of homes incorporating the California Mission revival style, his work was our inspiration for this project.”
The Wailea residence is situated at the top of a crest that overlooks an adjacent golf course that provides open view planes. Utilizing a curved design to make a modern architectural statement, three large curved sliding doors pocket into the adjacent curved walls enhance the view while creating a seamless flow to the pool deck area. The curved lanai roof above has large eight-foot overhangs that cantilevers out to provide protection and eliminates the need for columns. The design incorporates feng shui concepts throughout and maintains a clean contemporary Hawaiian feel that caters to the outdoor living lifestyle.
